Index of Authors' Contributions
to British Literary Annuals

(Cont.)

This index was compiled from my research, Andrew Boyle's An Index to the Annuals 1820-1850 and Frederick Faxon's Literary Annuals and Gift Books: A Bibliography 1823-1903. To view prose or poetry pieces, click on the Title.

The author's biographical identification is from Boyle's index (not my own).  Understandably, these identifications are somewhat dated and most likely unappreciative of the entire biographical data of the individual.

Notes

1. Maria Diana Dods (a cross-dressing poet) used the male pseudonym "David Lyndsay" when publishing in the annuals.  See Betty T. Bennett's scholarly work, Mary Diana Dods: A Gentleman and a Scholar (Johns Hopkins UP, 1994). [Return to Dods]

2. Note in Boyle: This, although signed with Lamb's name, was written by Hood, [editor of The Gem] who had omitted Lamb's contribution "The Gipsy's Malison," "as it would shock all mothers."
KDH Note: Lamb was perplexed by Hood's decision and wrote to B.W. Procter (a frequent correspondent and friend) asking him to review the poem. (Click here to see January 29, 1829 letter, text of poem, "The Gypsy's Malison" and Hood's replacement prose piece, "A Widow.")   [Return to Hood]
