Our History

The Center for Education and Cultural Studies(CECS) was founded in the late 1980s by Dr. Henry Giroux, in collaboartion with Dr. Peter McLaren, both of whom were then on Maimi's Educational Leadership (EDL) faculty.

Our Mission

The Center for Education and Cultural Studies is an interdisciplinary organization that serves to foster continued dialogue, development, and dissemination of research that focuses on the complex and multiple links between education and culture. The founding principles of the organization include an appreciation for multiple and inter-disciplinary perspectives on educational issues; an awareness of the critical role of mass media in the framing of educational issues; an acknowledgement of the significance of youth subcultures and popular culture; the intersectionality of race, gender, class, sexuality, and disability in the production and circulation of cultural meanings; dynamic and progressive forms of citizenship and democracy; and the cultural politics of formal and nonformal education. In an effort to promote teaching, inquiry and service in the area of Cultural Studies at Miami University, the CECS provides a variety of programming geared toward faculty, graduate and undergraduate students.
