Here are some common questions we have answered about our club. If you want to know anything further, please contact us.

What styles of martial arts are taught here?
Tae Kwon Do mostly, also Hapkido, and Judo.

What is Tae Kwon Do?
Well... Tae Kwon Do is a Korean style of martial arts that emphasizes kicking techniques. Tae Kwon Do translates to "Way of Hands and Feet." The main feature of Tae Kwon Do is that it is a free-fighting self-defense using bare hands to repel an enemy.

What is Hapkido? Hapkido is another form of Korean self-defence that employs joint locks emphasizing circular motion. It is a way to control your opponent through non-resistant movements.

What is Judo?
Judo, similar to Hapkido, means "gentle way." It is a Japanese martial art that emphasizes throwing opponents to the ground and immobilizing them.

When/where do we meet?
We meet Tuesday from 6:30-8pm, Thursday from 6-8pm, and Saturday 2-4:30pm in the studio space in Clawson Gym.

How are you affiliated with the University?
We are an official Miami Club Sports Team, and we represent our school at a few tournaments each year.

Why should I join?
Well ....

  • Get in great physical shape!
  • learn self-defence techniques!
  • Participate in tournaments!
  • Build self-confidence, reduce stress!
  • Improve your personal fitness!
  • Learn self discipline!
  • Make lasting friendships!
  • Become a healthier person!

How do I join?
Just show up! Wear workout clothes.

How much does it cost?
For an entire semester it costs one person $50. This covers the testing fees at the end of the semester and the cost for purchasing your new earned belt. A uniform (do bok) costs $20. Compared to other commercial schools, our club is inexpensive. It is also worth noting that we have some of the lowest prices of entry of any club sport at Miami.

Is practice hard?
It mostly depends on how much you currently work out. During the first week of practice you might feel sore, but stick with it ... you wont regret it! It also depends on who is leading practice. Each practice is different, and some might be harder than others.

Do I need any prior experience?
We encourage students new to the sport of martial arts to join us! All Miami University students and staff are welcome to join.

What if I have prior experience?
If you have a belt rank with another school, unfortunately you will have to start at white belt again. Our school has different requirements for testing, and we are more of a traditional taekwondo club. Our master has let people double test if you really show us your skill, so it is possible to advance back to where you rank in your other school.

How often do you test?
At the end of each semester the group tests as a whole. If you feel that you are not ready, no problem, we don't force you to test. Situational exceptions can be made.

Who are the black belt instructors?
Dr. Myers, our faculty advisor in the Zoology department, is a third-degree black belt who teaches class. In addition, we also have Dr. James, Dave Dewitt, Sam James, Tom James, and Will James as first-degree instructors.
